It is a matter of national pride to emphasize the fact that Bulgaria was the first country of the former socialist bloc to set up its national Atlantic club to promote the values of the Trans-Atlantic Alliance, and it was only in the year following the fall of the communist regime in. Bulgaria that these values were voiced in the Bulgarian Parliament by the present Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country. Therefore, the candidacy is as much a personal ambition, as it reflects the desire of the people of my country to gain more of the well-deserved respect within the community of NATO member states. In addition, I firmly believe that Bulgaria is still to play a vital rose in making the whole Balkan region an area of increased security, co-operation and mutual understanding.
